ABC Family Channel is catching on to the trend for horror TV shows and with its new name change (Freeform) will also come a change in programming, particularly with the new horror series "Dead of Summer."

According to Deadline, the family-oriented network has long been a place for kids and family to tune in for wholesome entertainment that is designed specifically for a younger audience. It is currently developing the series to be a teen horror/supernatural thriller that is set in the 1980s and takes place at a summer camp. It seems to be taking its cues from other popular horror TV shows currently airing, which include "Scream" and "Scream Queens."

The camp is called Camp Clearwater and features teens and kids out for summer vacation, embarking on their summer firsts. That includes first kisses, first loves, first freedom and, now, first deaths.

Although this seems like another throwback to the horror films inherent to the era, which include "Friday the 13th" and "Sleepaway Camp," it will deviate from those plot lines and take the horror in a supernatural direction. Instead of masked psycho killers, the campers will encounter the horror of the cursed land.

Camp Clearwater is set in a land that has a mysterious dark mythology to it and that is what takes the form of horror in this series. The seemingly idyllic Midwestern setting soon morphs into terror and tragedy as victims fall one-by-one throughout the episodes.

The series has been ordered from "Once Upon a Time" creators Adam Horowitz & Edward Kitsis, as well as their "OUaT" writer Ian Goldberg.

ABC Family executive vice president Karey Burke spoke with Deadline about the project.

"'Dead of Summer' is about what happens when summer camp goes wrong -- really, really wrong," Burke said. "The horror genre is new for us and I'm thrilled to have Adam [Horowitz], Eddy [Kitsis] and Ian [Goldberg] bring their immeasurable talent to our network and usher us into this new space."
