On Sunday night, "Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver dove right into the Syrian refugee crisis and went straight for the throat of Republican governors and presidential hopefuls opposing the policy.

According to Time, there is no stronger vetting or screening process in place throughout the entire world than the one that allows refugees to enter the United States from Syria. However, this past week, the House of Representatives called for tougher screening procedures, in particular on those coming from Syria.

Governors of several states have also made public announcements refusing to take in Syrian refugees. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence even kicked a family out of his state, forcing them to resettle in Connecticut.

In response to all of this fear mongering, which seems to be coming almost exclusively from the Republican party, Oliver broke down the strenuous international screening process to which refugees must already submit, before they can even be referred to the U.S. for resettlement. Once referred, the refugees must undergo an American screening process that is far more extensive.

"You'll be put through security screenings by the National Counterterrorism Center, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, and if you're a Syrian refugee, you'll get an additional layer of screening called the Syria Enhanced Review, which may include a further check by a special part of Homeland Security - the USCIS [United States Citizenship and Immigration Services] fraud detection and national security directorate," Oliver passionately said during his show.

He also comically compared the arrival of Syrian migrants to the historical arrival of many modern Americans' forebears. Oliver pointed out that, while fear mongering has been a common response among Americans for centuries, only once in the U.S. did immigrants ever prove truly deadly.

While fear arose over waves of Irish, Vietnamese, Cubans, Haitian and many other immigrant groups, the only time in the history of this land that fears actually materialized was when the Pilgrims arrived to decimate the Native Americans. Ironically, that event will be celebrated later this week by the entire country on Thanksgiving.
