It has been nearly four years since actor Tom Welling graced the small screen as Superman on "Smallville," but he is about to return to TV on CBS in a series titled "Section 13."

According to Deadline, Welling will be returning to his TV roots as an action star in the new series. The series hails from "Smallville" producer Warner Bros. TV, and it will be produced by Welling's own production company.

Although the show will have a familiar theme that audience's have become accustomed to on broadcast television, there will be a few storylines that are unique to the series.

The show follows a man who was trained by the C.I.A. and who carried out many operations for the covert agency. A personal tragedy turns him away from the government organization and sets him on a new mission.

He takes a new position as a private contractor, taking on perilous jobs with high stakes, utilizing his extensive training in the C.I.A. as a black ops officer.

It seems as though his own personal tragedy has led him down a path of self-destruction, and he is willing to allow himself to potentially be killed for the greater good.

Welling will be playing the lead role in this new series. He will also be executive producing the show, along with Carla Kettner, who wrote and created the series. Kettner is perhaps best known for her contributing work on the series "Bones."

Although Welling has not been seen lately playing any leads on television, he has been quite active behind the camera. He started executive producing during the last two seasons of "Smallville," and his production company has been under a WBTV contract. One of the better known projects from the company was the cheerleader drama "Hellcats."
