Republican Senator Mitt Romney is dubbed as the wealthiest senator by Investopedia. He was known to have tried running for the presidential seat twice.

Romney reportedly got his fortune in business ventures before diving into politics. He was known to have founded and run the private investment firm Bain Capital. He was the youngest of four siblings and was born into one of the most prominent families within the Mormon faith.

George Romney, his father, was a successful business executive who managed American Motors from near bankruptcy to record profits.

George later served as governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969 and as secretary of housing and urban development in the cabinet of President Richard M. Nixon.

Romney attended Stanford University in California, which was interrupted after he went on a 30-month missionary campaign for the Mormon church in France.

He later returned to the U.S. and graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor's degree in English. The younger Romney earned J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Harvard University in 1975.
