Donald Trump has been indicted for a second time, this time for his classified documents scandal. However, in a bit of irony, Trump may have signed into law his downfall.

This is because he signed the law thinking it might lead to political rival Hillary Clinton landing in jail for mishandling classified documents. The law he signed backfired, as Clinton was never charged with this, let alone indicted.

Before he took office, during the 2016 presidential race, Trump had consistently hit Clinton over claims that she had mishandled classified information.

According to Newsweek, the Trump-signed legislation that led to the ex-POTUS's new indictment is section 702 of the FISA Amendments Ac. It included a change to 18 U.S. Code §1924 which increased the penalty for "unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents or material" from just one year in prison to five years. This means that it went from being a misdemeanor to a Class E felony.

The charges against Trump have now been unsealed, and it showed that he had been indicted on 37 criminal counts. Should he be found guilty, he may land in prison for several decades, becoming the first former president to do so.

Donald Trump Took US Nuclear Secrets Home to Mar-a-Lago

With the indictment now unsealed, it showed that the former POTUS stored classified nuclear information in the boxes he took back home to Florida. The indictment stated that he took home "information regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign countries, United States nuclear programs, potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack, and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack."

The indictment also showed that the former president could not keep national secrets to himself, as he reportedly "showed secret plan of attack to others," according to The Guardian. The incident reportedly happened at the Trump national golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, with Trump showing off "a classified map related to a military operation."

The indictment also showed how much Trump went to great lengths to hide the classified documents he stole from authorities. The many hiding places he stored them in were not secure areas, as they included "a ballroom, a bathroom and shower, an office space, his bedroom, and a storage room."

Donald Trump Attorneys Quit Classified Documents Case

Meanwhile, two of the lawyers representing the former president in the classified documents case over the last two months have now resigned. They are Jim Trusty and John Rowley, both of whom did not reveal the exact reason why they quit but simply said it was a "logical moment" and that they do not practice in Florida. The case will be heard in Miami.

Trump did find a new attorney to represent him, and that is New York lawyer Todd Blanche, who currently represents him in the other big-name Trump indictment, which is the Stormy Daniels hush money payment scandal, according to CNBC.
