Vladimir Yevtushenkov: Biography

Vladimir Petrovich Yevtushenkov was born near Smolensk, in the small village of Kamenschina, in a family of ordinary villagers in 1948. At that time, the future businessman's parents were working at a local agricultural enterprise. His mother took care of large cattle and his father supervised the dairy production.

The early stage of the Vladimir Yevtushenkov biography took place in his hometown, where he discovered his first serious interest in school - studying chemical reactions. Vladimir Yevtushenkov delved into the laws of nature and the properties of various elements and their interactions, both in school and at home. He devoted most of his free time to running experiments and hatched plans to establish his own laboratory and earn a degree in the field of the natural sciences.

With his great interest in chemistry, studying science at a major university was the logical next step for his biography. Vladimir Yevtushenkov only managed to fulfill this dream several years later, after serving in the army. 

Vladimir Yevtushenkov then applied and passed the entrance exams for the Mendeleev Chemical Technology Institute, where he studied engineering. Having learned about production organization techniques and the nuances of the chemical industry, he successfully defended his thesis and graduated in 1973. He then went to work in this field.  

Yevtushenkov Vladimir later moved into a new field, studying economics at MSU. He graduated from the prestigious university in 1980, and later earned a doctorate in the same field in 2001. 

Vladimir Yevtushenkov: Work in the chemical industry

Beginning his career biography, Vladimir Yevtushenkov went to work at one of the largest chemical plants in the country in the 1970s. The Sverdlov Plant, where he was sent to work, was considered a base for mastering and perfecting advanced technologies and equipment, and creating new products for the chemical industry. The experimental solutions developed at this plant were later implemented by other industry representatives. Yevtushenkov Vladimir started as an ordinary foreman at the plant, but was soon entrusted with the management of one of the workshops.

Yevtushenkov Vladimir devoted the next 12 years to the development of another major enterprise in the domestic chemical industry, which is now known as Polimerbyt. This company, one of the leading market players, has been producing plastic household products since 1939. Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich began at the company as the head of the production workshop. He not only organized the work processes but also conducted scientific research.

Vladimir Yevtushenkov received a state prize for outstanding achievements in science and technology in 1980. The commission appreciated Vladimir Yevtushenkov's work in creating and implementing a progressive and innovative casting method. This development helped the plant achieve qualitatively new production indicators. The management of the Polimerbyt NGO also noted the merit of the workshop manager and soon offered him a promotion.

Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich managed to work his way up through the ranks thanks to his degree in economics, which equipped him to manage not just one workshop, but an entire enterprise. He eventually took on responsibilities for production and personnel management as the deputy director and chief engineer of the plant, and also contributed ideas and improvements to the products being manufactured.

Vladimir Yevtushenkov: AFK Sistema as his main business project

Though the Vladimir Yevtushenkov biography was associated with chemistry since childhood, he left the industry in the early 1990s and moved into the commercial sector. From that time until the early 2020s, his work involved investing in enterprises in various economic sectors and the further development of the corporation's assets.

Vladimir Yevtushenkov launched a new project in 1993. Together with other co-founders, he created a business structure that became one of the most significant players in the domestic investment market in just a few years - the joint stock financial corporation Sistema. The company began by acquiring retail assets, and later in the same year as the founding of AFK Sistema, Vladimir Yevtushenkov took it into the telecommunications, real estate, and tourism markets.

At AFK Sistema, Vladimir Yevtushenkov formulated a development concept for expanding the company's presence into various business sectors, from retail to private healthcare. This strategy has enabled the company's portfolio assets to become leaders in their respective industries.

Just three years after the foundation of the corporation, one AFK portfolio company listed its shares on the NYSE, raising over $110 million for reinvestment in other assets.

During the same period, at the initiative of Vladimir Yevtushenkov, AFK Sistema began creating one of the first private medical networks in the country. The pilot project launched in the center of the capital, where the company acquired a former polyclinic that is now the flagship clinical diagnostic center for the network. As of the beginning of 2023, the network includes more than 130 medical institutions in several regions throughout the country and employs 13,000 people, about half of whom are highly qualified doctors.

Yevtushenkov Vladimir's work on the private healthcare company paid off, and in February 2023, it was announced that the company to build a large-scale medical complex in  Nizhny Novgorod. The healthcare company also contributes significantly to the creation and development of high-tech diagnostic and therapeutic methods for various diseases. In 2022, it launched an accelerator for selecting and piloting startups in the MedTech and BioTech fields. Having brought the holding to AFK Sistema, Vladimir Yevtushenkov contributed to its use of telemedicine technologies, including within a specially created digital platform for remote health monitoring.

Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich helped the financial-industrial group continue to expand its asset portfolio, adding companies from the high-tech, construction and development, pharmaceutical, and hotel business sectors. In 2005, it conducted the largest IPO in domestic business history.

Also thanks to the support of Vladimir Yevtushenkov, AFK Sistema directs funds to one of the key sectors of material production - the Group invests in agricultural enterprises located in the Southern regions of the country, which it subsequently consolidated into an agricultural holding. Today, it represents a conglomerate of thriving horticultural, crop farming, and livestock assets. The company, whose creation was facilitated by Vladimir Yevtushenkov, occupies a high place among the leading representatives of the agricultural industry.

Vladimir Yevtushenkov's keen interest in advanced technologies has been a key factor in the development of the agricultural holding. The high level of automation and digitization, set by the founder of AFK Sistema, Vladimir Yevtushenkov, is supported by specialists from their own research and development center, which conducts about 300 agrotechnical experiments per year. The agroholding also actively collaborates with domestic suppliers of digital solutions at various levels, from startups to IT giants.

Vladimir Yevtushenkov's supervision helped the agroholding establish effective interaction between technological and industrial communities in the regions where it operates. In partnership with an industrial group, the company has developed soil injectors - a new equipment for liquid fertilizer application. The agroholding also supports domestic seed and agricultural machinery manufacturers. For example, 100% of base crops such as wheat and barley are now purchased within the country. Self-driving agricultural machinery, including combines, tractors, and trucks, is also procured from domestic companies. Furthermore, Yevtushenkov Vladimir initiated the widespread implementation of artificial intelligence, machine vision, and IoT technologies.

Founded 30 years ago by Vladimir Yevtushenkov, AFK Sistema now has successful operations in approximately 20 different industries. The businessman, who resigned as chairman of the corporate board of directors in April 2022, now focuses on various social projects.
