Peru President Dina Boluarte was just grilled by government prosecutors as she stands accused of corruption with her ongoing Rolex Scandal, or "Rolexgate," as they call it in the South American country.

Her home was raided last weekend as police searched for the controversial luxury watch collection she owned. While police raiding the homes of Peruvian presidents has happened time and time again, Boluarte is now the first Peruvian president whose home was raided while she was still in office.

After prosecutors grilled her for hours over the Rolex scandal on Friday, she slammed them and insisted that these luxury items were loaned to her. She did admit exercising bad judgment, however, as she faces the latest political crisis plaguing her presidency since she succeeded her former running mate, the ousted former President Pedro Castillo.

"It was an error to accept as a loan those watches from my friend," she admitted to the press after her closed-door testimony in the capital, Lima. There, she told prosecutors that all the watches in the collection, except for one, were "loaned to her by a friend who she said hoped they would reflect well on the country if she wore them," according to Reuters.

She then slammed the investigation against her, calling it a "lie" and a "smoke screen," urging prosecutors to be more professional. The testimony came a day after she survived two attempts in Peru's unitary Congress to discuss whether or not she should be impeached over the Rolex Scandal. The votes were in favor of "no," effectively scrapping any impeachment attempt while investigations were going on.

This is not the only legal trouble that the Peruvian president is facing, as she is also currently under investigation over the deaths of protesters who marched against her last year in Ayacucho.

Where Did the Controversial Watches and Jewelry from the Rolex Scandal Come From?

During her testimony before prosecutors, President Boluarte admitted that the watches came from her ally, Wilfredo Oscorima, the governor of the southern rural region of Ayacucho. However, the Associated Press noted that this new official testimony contradicted her previous statement where she said that her luxury watch collection was a "fruit of my labor" for working since she was 18.

The scandal began when the digital news program La Encerrona pointed out that the president, who was a simple government official before becoming vice president during the Castillo administration, was seen wearing a Rolex watch worth up to $14,000. This sparked a slew of reports that she has been wearing many different Rolex watches, as well as a gold and diamond Cartier bracelet estimated to cost more than $54,000.

Peru President Dina Boluarte Met With Protests as She Left Prosecutor's Office

After she testified, Dina Boluarte was accompanied by a motorcade and a full security escort, which is common for the top leaders of various countries. However, as she was leaving the prosecutor's office in Lima, she was met with protests, according to Barron's.

Police had blocked off roads in the path of the president's motorcade, but the protesters still showed up as the embattled president faces a corruption scandal, as well as being connected to the deaths of several protesters last year.
