Even top companies suffer from glitches in products that are already out in the marketplace. There is a recent recall of some models of the iPhone 5 because of problems with the battery, App Picker reports.

Apple has opened an iPhone 5 battery replacement program. They have recently discovered that a small percentage of units experienced shorter battery life, which necessitated frequent battery charging. The iPhone 5 was launched back in September 2012. According to Apple, the units affected were those that were sold between the time of the iPhone 5 launch and January 2013.

There is a support page on the Apple website where owners can enter their iPhone's serial number to check if the unit they have has a bad battery. If the unit is on the list, the owner can take the phone to an authorized reseller or to an Apple Store and get a replacement battery.

According to the Apple website, residents in China and the U.S. will start getting their battery replacement beginning on Aug. 22. Owners outside of these two countries can have their defective batteries replaced starting on Aug. 29. The owner should bring the unit with them because the unit will be examined prior to battery replacement to make sure that it is in good working condition and qualifies to receive a replacement battery.

Apple also recommends that iPhone 5 owners affected by the defective battery should back up all their iPhone data to iCloud or iTunes. The company is also recommending that owners should turn off the Find my iPhone feature and then erase all the settings and data by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content.

Owners that have had their iPhone battery affected by the issue and had bought a replacement battery before the recall came into effect should contact Apple so they can get a refund.
