Defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka and top seed Novak Djokovic advanced to the semifinals of the 2015 Australian Open after taking down their respective opponents on Wednesday morning in Melbourne, Australia.

Wawrinka moved one step closer to successfully defending his title after scoring a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory over fifth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan in their quarterfinal match at Rod Laver Arena.

Wawrinka cruised to comfortable wins in the first two sets of the match, but Nishikori got into his rhythm and pushed the fourth-seeded Swiss to the limit during the third set.

In the tiebreaker of the third set, Wawrinka quickly took a 6-1 lead, but Nishikori saved one match point after another before committing a crucial error, letting the defending champion ran away with a straight-set win.

"I was serving really well. I'm happy with that part of my game," said Wawrinka, who tallied 20 aces against just four double faults against Nishikori. "It's never easy to break Kei because he's playing so well. You need to be focused on what you need to do. You need to change the speed. You need to change where you serve also."

On the other hand, Djokovic arranged a semis showdown against Wawrinka after cruising to a 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-2 victory against eighth seed Milos Raonic of Canada in their quarterfinal showdown.

Djokovic, who is looking to win his fifth Australian Open title, was on target on Wednesday morning, tallying 33 winners and eight aces. Raonic had 15 aces in the match, but had 36 unforced errors, which was simply too much against an opponent of Djokovic's caliber.

"He just didn't allow me to organize my game," Raonic said of Djokovic. "Even when he was returning well, by the end of the match he was doing a good job of playing deep and never allowing me to go forward."

On the women's side, Serena Williams booked a spot in the semis with an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory against 11th seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. Williams, who is eyeing her sixth Australian Open title, had 15 aces and 31 winners in the match.

But while Serena Williams managed to advance to the next round, her sister, Venus, was not as lucky, losing to compatriot Madison Keys in the quarterfinals 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Keys, who overcame 45 unforced errors, spoiled the potential semis showdown between the Williams sisters.
