Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams will look to arrange a final showdown when they play in the semifinals of the 2015 Australian Open on Wednesday night at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

Sharapova, who is looking to win her second Australian Open title, will go up against fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova in the first women's singles semis match of the day.

Sharapova has been on target in the tournament as she has only dropped one set in her first four matches. The second-seeded Russian scored a 6-3, 6-0 win against 21st seed Peng Shuai in the fourth round, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 victory against seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinals.

Makarova, who will be making her second Grand Slam semis after also reaching the final four of the 2014 U.S. Open, has been on a roll as well. The 26-year-old has yet to drop a set in the tournament, and cruised to a convincing 6-4, 6-0 victory against third seed Simona Halep in the quarterfinals.

Sharapova has not lost to Makarova, but the 2008 Australian Open champion knows that Makarova will be a difficult opponent, considering the fact that the 10th-seeded Russian has already exceeded expectations in the tournament.

"Besides playing another Russian, I'm also facing an opponent that wasn't necessarily a favorite coming into that stage," Sharapova said in a news conference. "That's always a tricky situation because she's going to come into that match free and almost happy to be in that situation, and that's dangerous."

Meanwhile, top seed Serena Williams will look to move a win away from capturing her sixth Australian Open title when she faces Madison Keys in the other semis match.

Williams, who is coming off a 6-2, 6-2 win against 11th seed Dominika Cibulkova in the quarterfinals, will look to avenge her sister's defeat to Keys. The unseeded 19-year-old defeated Venus Williams 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Serena Williams wanted to face her sister in the semis, but the 18-time Grand Slam champion is also happy for Keys and for United States because there will be an American in this year's Australian Open Final.

"It's good to see another American, another African American, in the semifinals playing so well," Serena Williams said. "Regardless, there's going to be an American in the finals, so that is great. It's also great for me and Venus because we know that finally there are other Americans that are constantly playing well and playing better."

The Sharapova-Makarova match is scheduled to start around 9:30 p.m. EST, which will be followed by the Williams-Keys match. After the two women's semis showdown, Tomas Berdych and Andy Murray will collide in the first semis match on the men's side.
