Season 3 of "Arrow" was filled with dark twists and sharp turns, to say the least.

The season kicked off with the death of Sara Lance, who was a major character on the show in the first two seasons. By the time Season 3 ended, Thea was resurrected from the dead, Roy said goodbye to Starling City and Oliver had gone through a major identity crisis.

During the finale, Oliver managed to take down Ra's al Ghul, the leader of the League of Assassins, and save Starling City from destruction. Malcolm Merlin then stepped up as Ra's successor and become the new head of the League, while Thea adopted a new superhero identity as Speedy. In addition, Oliver decided to hang up his hood to drive off in a convertible with Felicity.

In an interview with CrossMap, "Arrow" executive producer Marc Guggenheim hinted that Season 4 will not be as dark as the third season.

"It will take a lighter tone," he teased, adding that "that's pretty much the only thing I say without spoiling it."

The showrunner went on to say that he does not regret the dark turn of events that played out in Season 3.

"We've been working for about a month now in the writers' room, talking about season 4, and I think that one thing we all collectively understood was season 3 beginning with Sara's death, because it's the death of a major character on the show, it set a tone for the remainder of the season. And I'm not the least bit apologetic for that tone," said Guggenheim.

Guggenheim continued, "I happen to like dark and I like the fact that Arrow is a pretty dark show particularly for a network show. That said, every year you want to mix things up and there was sort of a collective desire on all of our parts to try to inject a little bit more lightness into the show, a little bit more humor. It's not going to radically change. The show's still going to be the show but in terms of tone we're coming off a very, very hard season for all of our characters. We wanted to try to mix it up a little bit."

The showrunner also hinted that the Season 4 finale will leave fans in shock as the writers continue to work toward writing "a potential ending that is very, very interesting. But the first step in surprising all of you is surprising us," he said, according to TVLine.
