It has been quite a long time since the epic Disney love story Sleeping Beauty has been told from an evil point of view. Angelina Jolie will portray the evil queen Maleficent which is set to release this May 2014.

Maleficent is a witch who curses the king's daughter after his army invades the forest where she grew up. Sources say the live-action film will show another side to the horned antagonist when it is released after nearly five years of production, namely the idea of Maleficent fighting for peace and justice.

According to the synopsis, the movie tells the untold story of Disney's iconic villain from the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, who grows up as a beautiful and pure-hearted winged woman in a peaceful forest kingdom until it becomes threatened by an invading army of humans.

Maleficent becomes a protector of her kingdom and fights a great battle against the kind of the humans and places a curse on his newborn daughter Aurora. Maleficent eventually comes to realize that Aurora holds the key to peace in the land.

The plot has left most fans disappointed because it looks like Maleficent isn't going to be a character study of a complex villain but rather sympathetic portrayal of a hero who is misunderstood. Some criticize Disney for not making a movie starring a straight-up villain. The plot also bears close resemblance to Once Upon a Time, in which Maleficent adopts a son and tries to do the right things.

Not everyone is convinced Maleficent isn't worth watching. A Fansided writer wrote "one of the things I enjoyed the most about this is the transitions between the animated original and the new modern day. It helps to show a new generation of children the classic tale while reminding the rest of us of the movie we all grew up with."
