Dustin Diamond, the actor who played Samuel "Screech" Powers on the '90s sitcom "Saved by the Bell," is asking a judge to delay the start time of his four-month jail sentence for stabbing a man during a bar fight last Christmas.

Diamond was ordered to report to a Wisconsin jail on Sunday, June 28; however, his lawyer filed a motion to delay the sentence in order to give the star and his legal team time to file a potential appeal, reports Philly.com. The former child star has also requested permission to leave the state to perform at previously booked comedy gigs.

He is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on Thursday, July 2.

Earlier this month, Diamond was convicted of two misdemeanor counts following a three-day jury trial. The jury found him guilty of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct but cleared him of a felony charge of recklessly endangering public safety.

The incident occurred in December 2014 when the 38-year-old actor was taken into custody by police in Ozaukee County for allegedly stabbing a man with a switchblade during a fight at the Grand Avenue Saloon in Port Washington on Christmas night.

In a criminal complaint, Diamond and his fiancée Amanda Schutz, 27, stated that they got into a physical altercation with two men and a woman. Court documents show the victim suffered from a non-life-threatening, 1/2-inch wound under his armpit and heavy bleeding. However, Diamond told police he accidentally stabbed one of the men while trying to defend his fiancée, who is still facing a misdemeanor charge for disorderly conduct.

According to court documents, Diamond said, "There was a group of intoxicated people being rude and insulting" at the bar that night. He also claimed he intervened after his girlfriend got into an altercation with another woman and was bleeding. Diamond said he unintentionally stabbed the man while "chaos broke out and people were grabbing at him."

Following his conviction, Wisconsin Judge Paul Malloy handed Diamond a light four-month sentence along with 15 months of probation last week, reports The Associated Press.
