Alicia Vikander has left "Assassin's Creed" but the film has already found its replacement.

Ariane Labed, the Greek-born French actress, will replace the Swedish actress. Labed made a huge impression this past May at the Cannes Film Festival in Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Lobster." There is no word on what role she will play in the film but she is best known for her work in Athina Rachel Tsangari's "Attenberg" for which she won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival in 2010. She also won the Locarno Best Actress award in 2014 for her work in Lucia Borleteau's "Fidelio, Alice's Odyssey."

Labed is joining Michael Fassbender, who is producing and also starring in the film, and Marion Cotillard. Justin Kurzel will direct the movie which is be produced by New Regency and Ubisoft. The film is also being co-financed by RatPac and Alpha Pictures. Frank Marshall, Arnon Milchan, Jean-Julien Baronnet, Conor McCaughan and Pat Crowley are also producing. Plot details have been kept under wraps and, as a result, it is unknown what characters each actor will play.

The project is one of the most high-profile video game adaptations due to its talent and because the video game is one of the most popular in the market. The franchise has already sold 91 million units and a number of the games have went on to win major video game awards. Reviews for the series have also remained consistent.

Vikander was originally set to star in the film but the actress could not fit it in her schedule due to other commitments. She recently joined the latest Jason Bourne installment, directed by Paul Greengrass, with Matt Damon and Julia Stiles.

"Assassin's Creed" is set to start production in early fall for a Dec. 21, 2016 release. Fox is distributing.
