"Gotham," FOX's pre-Batman series, has attempted to collect and cast every villain and antihero from the saga to employ them as the latest scoundrel or foreboding "big bad."

The upcoming season will include a number of villains, including Firefly, the Flamingo and Calendar Man. But, it will also feature ally Azrael.

Showrunner Bruno Heller has revealed the line-up on an ongoing basis; he is intent on the second season blowing the first out of the water. For him, that's best done by finally showing Bruce Wayne's initial transformation into Batman and continuing to cast a light on the multiple adversaries who terrorize Gotham City. The Joker, Mr. Freeze, Hugo Strange and countless other rogues are rumored to appear during the second season of the show, tipping the scale in favor of evil, it would seem.

According to the comic series, ally Azrael will, in the future, work with Batman on several occasions. Also, he once joined forces with Alfred to rescue Batman when he was kidnapped.

A vigilante like the Dark Knight himself, Azrael also took up the reigns for Batman after he was temporarily paralyzed following a confrontation with Bane. Azrael's introduction could simultaneously bring forth one of Gotham's secret societies, the Order of St. Dumas, which he was a part of.

The future bat cave, which the young Bruce Wayne and caretaker Alfred found during season finale of the first season, will be the impetus for change in Bruce. Because of that cave, Bruce will finally find out who his father was as a man, what Wayne Enterprises is, and he will begin his transformation into Batman.

"Gotham" will return to the small screen Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. on Fox.
