English Premier League club Liverpool is eyeing Germany's World Cup hero Mario Gotze to replace their star striker Raheem Sterling who transferred to Manchester City in a long-drawn deal, Metro reported.

Superstar in demand

The 23-year-old German midfielder is pursued by other clubs like Italian stalwarts Juventus, but his stature in the Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich is enough to dissuade suitors from pursuing him.

However, a falling out with the Munchen management allegedly spurred the talks of an exit for Gotze. Liverpool was first to express interest after hearing of the possibility. Telegraph noted that the forward has been continuously frustrated by the immense lack of first team chances under Munich manager Pep Guardiola. Telegraph added that a move to the EPL is most likely the next step for the star.

When asked about the possible move to Anfield, the star was quoted as saying: "I don't need to comment on that."

Frustrated by a tame attack

In February, Goal reported that Guardiola's forward line has been a source of frustration for Gotze.

He was interviewed by Sky TV, as reported by Goal, following a draw with the Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk during the first leg of the UEFA Champions league."We had some problems in attack today," he told Sky TV after the match.

"We weren't able to play as we expected."We still have the return leg and we must give everything we have. This is the Champions League, where small details can be decisive," said Gotze. The Germans lost to the eventual champions FC Barcelona led by Lionel Messi.

The news has put Liverpool on high alert since the £49 million ($76 million) sale revenue of Raheem Sterling is still waiting to be spent for the Reds, according to the Telegraph. The check is most likely enough to acquire a star as big as Gotze, given Sterling is the most expensive English player for this season.

A star in the pros and for the national team

The former Borussia Dortmund star won two Bundesliga titles for his former club in 2011 and 2012. When he was transferred to Bayern Munich in 2013, he won the club championship titles in the Bundesliga for his first two years.

The two-time Fritz Walter Medalist led his home country Germany to get be the champions of the 2014 FIFA World Cup with two goals, also going down in history as the team that embarrassed hosts Brazil in a 7x1 match.
