After months of waiting, New Regency has released the first image of "Assassin's Creed."

The first image shows Michael Fassbender in the iconic hero suit from the renowned video game. Plot details have finally been revealed according to Yahoo News. Fassbender's character is named Callum Lynch. The character has not appeared in the Assassin's Creed video games but was created specifically for the film.

In the upcoming film, Lynch learns he has family ties to a secret assassin society, and his connection lets him experience the story of his ancestor, Aguilar, who lived in Spain in the 15th century. His experiences with Aguilar help him battle the Knights Templar in the present day.

The film is based on the popular video game of the same title and is being directed by the acclaimed director Justin Kurzel.

Kurzel is re-teaming with Fassbender after their work on "Macbeth," which is slated for release at the end of the year. The film will also reunite the two with Marion Cotillard, who was also in the upcoming adaptation of "Macbeth."

The film also stars Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed. Shooting is expected to begin next week in Malta, London and Spain.

"Assassin's Creed" was co-financed by RatPac and Alpha Pictures and is being produced by Oscar nominee Frank Marshall, Arnon Milchan, Jean-Julien Baronnet, Conor McCaughan, Fassbender and Pat Crowley. Ubisoft Motion Pictures, which is also behind the video game, helped develop the project and is producing with New Regency.

Fassbender will next be seen in the upcoming "Steve Jobs" film and recently finished "X-Men: Apocalypse." The actor is also known for his work on the Oscar-winning film "12 Years a Slave," "Hunger," and "Shame."

Cotillard recently received her second Oscar nomination for "Two Days, One Night" and is also known for her work in "La Vie en Rose," "Rust and Bone" and "The Dark Knight Rises."

Fox is releasing "Assassin's Creed" on Dec. 21, 2016.
