The new iOS 9 update for recent Apple devices differentiates itself from their previous iterations by establishing itself as the new standard for all future Apple products.

The update dropped on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and is available for the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, original iPad Mini and the fifth-generation iPod Touch, and all of the devices that followed after.

The update's features will slightly differ from device to device, but what the iOS 9 boasts for all recent devices is the increased battery life and a new low power mode. This problem has been one of the main gripes with Apple products and their increasingly power-demanding updates. Apple claims that this new low power mode will enable your device to squeeze out at least another 45 minutes to an hour before it dies.

Another major implication is the enhanced Siri and search functionality. The update will allow users to get a lot more specific with their requests, such as having Siri identify particular dates, times or locations. The specificity in search can now also allow you to view related results or suggested apps by swiping.

Aside from this, users will find a new News app that allows them to sift through articles and share with ease from a variety of different publications. Apple describes this feature as "beautiful content from the world's greatest sources, personalised for you."

"News seamlessly delivers the articles you want to read in a beautiful and uncluttered format, while respecting your privacy, because Apple doesn't share your personal data," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice-president of Internet Software and Services. "We already have nearly 20 publishers representing more than 50 titles joining us, including Condé Nast, ESPN, The New York Times, Hearst, Time Inc, CNN and Bloomberg."

The most widely raved about feature would have to be the new multi-tasking application exclusively for the iPad. This allows users to view two apps at once. While there can be two present on the screen at once, only one can be operated at a time, but switching between the two is as easy as tapping the disabled one.

Overall reviews of the operating system have all been positive and confirms it besting its predecessor. Tech Radar reports that the Apple Maps update prevents it from being the perfect update.

Many users have also reported mix reviews on the iOS 9's updated font from Neue Helvetica to a new custom font called San Francisco.
