In the trailer for Season 17's eighth episode of "Law & Order: SVU," titled "Melancholy Pursuit," Lt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) panics as she loses her adopted son at the playground.

"He's the most important thing in her life," the trailer's narrator says. "But next Wednesday, her life will never be the same."

If Noah (Bradley Dubow) is indeed kidnapped, it will undoubtedly be one of the most important plot developments of the season. However, many viewers likely know by now that they can't always trust a trailer.

The official episode synopsis makes no mention of Noah's abduction, although it does indicate viewers will be seeing more of "SVU" newcomer Sgt. Dodds (Andy Karl).

According to the synopsis, the Special Victims Unit will be tasked with finding a missing girl, and the case will take an emotional toll on Dodds.

Not much is known about Dodds at this point, other than that he is son to SVU Deputy Chief William Dodds (Peter Gallagher). It's possible that this case has particular significance for Dodds. Maybe he knows the victim?

While SVU always seems to bring a good story to the table, fans will no doubt be anxious to see if this new plot can top last week's case.

The previous episode centered on the Baker family, stars of the fictional reality show "13aker's Dozen." Clearly inspired by the real life Duggar family controversy, the episode concerned 13-year old Lane Baker's (Victoria Leigh) suspicious pregnancy and her parents' attempts to cover it up.

While fans may have expected the 17-year-old brother Graham (Angus O'Brien) as the perpetrator, in a clever twist, it turned out the family's priest was the true culprit.

Will the writers be able to top themselves this week? Find out next Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. In the meantime, check out the promo below.
