One of the big questions that lingered after the end of "Guardians of the Galaxy" was Peter Quill's origins.

Many thought that there might a connection between the hero and the main villain Thanos.

That no longer seems to be the case as Kurt Russell looks to be brought onto the sequel to take on the role of Quill's father.

According to The Wrap, the actor has not been formerly offered the role and he has yet to read the script, but apparently conversations are being prepared by both parties.

This certainly adds a nice wrinkle to the story as we all know that Quill is human on his mother's side without any real knowledge of what his father's side offers to the equation. How the meeting with his father ultimately affects and changes the character of Peter throughout the sequel could be one of the franchise's most intriguing aspects.

Russell is in high demand right now after being showcased in "Furious 7" and more recently appearing in Quentin Taratino's "The Hateful Eight."

Chris Pratt is slated to return to "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" in the role of Peter Quill. Zoe Saldana will reprise the role of Gamora, with Dave Bautista and Bradley Cooper also slated to make a return to the franchise. Vin Diesel is also expected to reprise the role of Groot in the new movie.

James Gunn will be back to direct the film. He helmed the first movie to tremendous critical and financial success. Critics lauded the new movie for its comic touch and its ability to take its universe rather lightly, a refreshing contrast to the increasingly brooding Marvel movies.

That film grossed $774 million worldwide and was one of the highest grossing films of 2014.

The sequel will hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
