After NBA 2K14 set the bar extremely high this year, it might be hard for any sports game to match its success. MLB 14 The Show, which is released on the next-gen PS4 on May 6, will try to do just this.

Perhaps the irony of it all lies in the fact that there is no MLB 2K game this year, which puts the spotlight -- and the pressure -- on MLB 14 The Show to deliver, especially considering that it is exclusively on Playstation.

As the first next-gen game to hit the market, MLB 14 The Show, just like NBA 2K14, will be breaking new ground in the sports gaming world. Gamers who are looking to purchase a copy of MLB 14 The Show are asking themselves: is the next-gen version better overall or is it just a boost in graphics? What could this game have that, perhaps, MLB 2K did not have in the past? In an article about MLB 14 The Show for Gamespot, Jack DeVries elaborates upon the differences between this year's game and the 2K Games of the past.

"To be clear, what MLB 2K had going for it was being the more stylish and personality-driven game," he wrote. "Better menus, better commentary, and even better music. If Sony can retool some of its presentation elements and inject some more life into the commentators and flavor text, then players might not even miss the 2K series next year."

Furthermore, DeVries also talked about the upgrades that gamers will notice from PS3 to PS4, and some of these details are particularly interesting because it's more than just about improving what was already there -- it's also about adding in what was never there in the first place.

"On the PlayStation 3, MLB 14 is one of the best-looking sports games around, but the PS4 version is notably superior. Completely redone textures and models on the stadiums bring it all to life. In fact, the PS4 crowd models are closer in polygon count to the ball players on the PS3, and consequently, look a lot more realistic. Additionally, for the first time, the stadium features children and batboys..."
