Video game enthusiasts are gearing up for an action-packed month of releases in May.

Unlike previous years when we would see repetitive releases on the same old video game platforms, each and every next-gen PS4 and Xbox One release in 2014 has marked a new era in many video game series. The most frustrating part about next-gen releases has been the fact that many of the new games have not been ready for launch on PS4 and Xbox One when the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions hit the shelves; nonetheless, the wait has always seemed to be worth it.

After video game titles such as NBA 2K14, Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty have set the bar high for its successors, gamers are anticipating the upcoming releases even more.

Below we have a list of some of the top game titles that will be on the shelves this May. The release dates are according to VG Releases and Gamestop.

1. MLB 14 The Show on PS4: The PS3 version of this game is already on the market and the early reviews are pretty solid. We can expect the next-gen version to be even more impressive, and we won't even have to wait that long. This game will be available on May 6.

2. Wolfenstein: The New Order on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 & Xbox One: It has been a while since we could see a single game released on this many platforms at once, but here we are. Each and every platform offering this game will have it ready on May 20 and not a day before. If you're looking to buy this game, feel free to let us know which platform you will be using for it.

3. Mario Golf World Tour on 3DS: Friday May 2 will be the big day for this game. Keeping track of the never-ending Mario releases can become difficult so be sure to check back again soon if there is another Mario game you're waiting for. At the very least, this game could be a fun, arcade-like alternative to the more serious golf games on the market.

4. Mario Kart 8 on Wii U: Raise your hand if you thought there was only one Mario Kart game -- the original one. It turns out this is the eighth installment of the popular game series, so feel free to try it out! Of course, this will be significantly different than the original game but it might be an interesting alternative. You'll have to wait a bit longer for this one, however, as it has a release date of May 30.

5. Watch Dogs on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, & Xbox 360: If you're looking forward to buying this game, you're probably also aware of the extra accessories and downloads that come along with it. This game is available on May 27.
