The Toyota Camry has been long regarded as a reliable mid-sized family sedan without too many frills or extras, but the 2015 version will see many changes.

The 2015 Toyota Camry will be completely redesigned as customers desire more style, comfort and performance. Toyota says every piece of the exterior has been changed, except the roof.

As competitors are creating visually appealing models, Toyota knew it had to follow suit. U.S. Toyota division chief Bill Fay said the company had to be more daring with its style.

"Everyone was raising the stakes a bit. We had to make sure we could keep this competitive," Fay said Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show where the car was unveiled.

Inside the car, the Camry adds a wireless charging system and softer materials. Along with a stiffer body, the car's suspension and steering was retuned, creating a more responsive driving experience.

The Camry has been the best selling car in the U.S. for the last 12 years, but competitors like Honda, Nissan, Ford and Hyundai are enticing buyers with exciting new features and body designs.

In 2013, Honda redesigned its Accord mid-size sedan and this year Hyundai introduced a new Sonata model for 2015. Even luxury makers like Mercedes-Benz have added cars under $30,000, which is in Camry buyers' price range.

As midsize sales fall and SUV sales rise, carmakers are doing whatever they can to keep buyers loyal to their brand. The new Sonata, for instance, is making their car compatible with Apple devices through Apple CarPlay.

Aaron Bragman of cars.com was surprised with all of Camry's changes for 2015.

"They had to step up their game," he said.

Thanks to the weak yen, Japanese automakers are enjoying hefty profits on cars like the Camry, in the tune of $2,500 to $3,000. The average price of a Camry is $23,965. That's $900 less than the average price of a midsize car, according to KBB.

"They will do what they need to do to stay on top," said Stephanie Brinley, an analyst with IHS Automotive.
