After almost six weeks and about 20 random shootings in the Kansas City, Mo. area, mostly on highways and roads, police have found the suspect involved.

Twelve of the shootings are suspected to be attached to this suspect.

According to Police Chief Darryl Forte, the man was arrested Thursday but hasn't been formally charged. The suspect is said to be a man in his mid-20s. He was arrested at 136th Street and Spring Street in Grandview, Mo.

Police searched the suspect's residence and hauled away his green Dodge Neon that was parked behind the building.

"We have a person in custody, and that person has not been charged. The investigation is ongoing, we are still looking at evidence. I can't say this is the only suspect. We are always looking," Forte said.

The Kansas City area has been on alert since March 8.

Almost all of the shootings occurred near Kansas City, most on highways and at night. Three people were hit by bullets, but their injuries were not life-threatening. Two were hit in the leg by bullets and another in the arm.

Police are not discussing details on the weapon involved or where the shots were fired from but a news conference is expected Friday night.

"We're here now to basically let people know someone has been apprehended," an upbeat Forte told reporters at an impromptu news conference about 50 yards from a house where the suspect was taken into custody earlier in the day. "I wanted to make sure the residents and those who travel through Kansas City know they're safe. They've been safe the whole time."

Thanks to tips from witnesses, one involving an erratic driver in south Kansas City and another from a man who was shot near the suspect's former residence. The first tipster was able to give a partial license plate number to police.
