A high school teacher in Redlands, California is in deep trouble, and no amount of detentions are going to make this situation right. Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst has been accused of having sexual relations with one of her students, resulting in her eventual pregnancy.

Whitehurst, 28, was a teacher at Citrus Valley High School in Redlands, and it was well known that she was pregnant. What school administrators and other students at the school were not aware of, however, was who the father of her baby was. That turned out to be one of her own students, who was just 16 years old when the child was conceived.

The student, who remains unnamed, was part of the student activities committee at the school. Whitehurst was one of the teachers in charge of that committee, and police believe it was this interaction that eventually spurred even more extracurricular activities.

"One thing led to another, and he ended up at her residence, and it's been going on, going for approximately one year now," said Redlands police Cmdr. Shawn Ryan. "She was open with her pregnancy. I don't know what her story was to everybody else, but it was an open pregnacy. The school district knew about it."

Whitehurst has since been taken into custody on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and was released after posting $25,000 bail Monday evening. The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office has yet to receive the case from the police department, and so no formal charges have been levied against Whitehurst at this time.

The news first broke after Whitehurst gave birth to her child Jun. 18. It was at that time that the parents of the boy she had been seeing became aware of the fact that they were now grandparents. They promptly contacted the authorities.

"The district takes this arrest very seriously. We are fully cooperating with police in their investigation in this matter," read a statement from the Redlands Unified School District. "Our heart goes out to the victim and his family."
