A new study suggests that certain nutrients in broccoli help slow down breast cancer growth.

DNA reported that a group of researchers did a clinical trial examintion on the effects of sulforaphane on breast tissues of women with breast cancer. They learned that the compound was well-tolerated by the patients, and it slowed down the growth of cancer cells.

"Our original goal was to determine if sulforaphane supplements would be well tolerated and might alter some of the epigenetic mechanisms involved in cancer," said Emily Ho, a professor at Oregon State University in the U.S.

"Dietary approaches have traditionally been thought to be limited to cancer prevention, but this demonstrated it could help slow the growth of existing tumors," she added.

The study involved 54 women with abnormal mammograms and those who were initially scheduled for a breast biopsy. They received a placebo or supplement that provided sulforaphane that was equal to one cup of broccoli soup per day.

Previous studies suggested that women who consumed more cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage or kale had a decreased risk of breast cancer.

So, for women out there, keep yourself away from breast cancer by consuming more broccolis. Here are three recipes to try for a healthier and cancer-free you.

Broccoli Cheddar Soup

Heat the oil and butter over medium heat. Add the leeks and garlic, then sauté. Stir the stock, honey, salt and pepper and bring to a simmer for 5 minutes. Stir the broccoli, squeeze in the juice of the lemon and drizzle the honey.

Cook over high heat and stir occasionally until the broccoli is barely tender and still bright green. Use a blender or food processor to puree the soup. Add shredded cheese when serving the soup. Check here for the ingredients and step-by-step directions.

Broccoli, Beef & Potato Hotdish

Fill casserole with ground beef, roasted broccoli and top with hash browns. This recipe is inspired by the classic Minnesota Tater Tot hotdish. Roasting the broccoli before adding it into the casserole gives the whole dish an exciting flavor. But, if you want to make the task simple, you can skip roasting the broccoli and use 6 cups of frozen broccoli instead. You can also omit 1 tablespoon oil, per EatingWell.

Broccoli & Goat Cheese Souffle

This recipe will surely impress your family and friends. This is very easy to make and the only trick is to get them on the table before they deflate. Serve it with tomato and fennel salad. For dessert, you can serve fresh strawberries drizzled with balsamic vinegar.
