For Donald Trump, if you can't beat them, join them -- at least in employing the means to counteract violent extremism. He insisted that there is a need to use torture when dealing with what he referred to as "savages."

Trump's Justification

"It's very hard to be successful in beating someone when your rules are very soft and their rules are unlimited, they have unlimited, they can do whatever they want to do," he said on Saturday, March 5, during a news conference in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump vowed to push for the broadening of laws when it comes to torture, such as waterboarding and other extreme methods of interrogation. He said that by doing so, the country can better compete with the violent tactics of the extreme militant groups.

He said that he doesn't intend to break the law, but rather make some improvements in order to avoid putting the United States at a strategic disadvantage against the extremist groups.

Counter Argument

Naturally, there are people who would raise their eyebrows and cringe at just the very mention of the word torture. However, Trump has a different way of looking at things and shared his thought on why the Unites States has opted to prohibit the use of extreme methods like waterboarding, which is a torture method that recreates that experience of drowning.

"Because I think we're a weak -- I think we've become very weak and ineffective. I think that's why we're not beating ISIS. It's that mentality," the GOP frontrunner said in an interview on CBS's "Face the Nation," which aired Sunday.

Host John Dickerson argued that doing the same method could mean stooping down to the same level as that of the extremists. He said, "isn't that what separates us from the savages?"

"No, I don't think so," Trump responded. "No, we have to beat the savages." "We have to play the game the way they're playing the game. You're not going to win if we're soft and they're -- they have no rules," he added.

On another counter argument that the extremist groups could impose their rage on the American hostages, Trump simply brushed it off by saying, "They're doing that anyway."

"Did somebody tell ISIS, 'Look, we're going to treat your guys well. Will you please do us a favor and treat our guys well?' They don't do that," he added. He said that it's very hard to win a fight when you are playing by the rules, but your opponents have got none.
