Throughout the last month, Donald Sterling's racist comments have dominated headlines. Unfortunately, the first round of the NBA playoffs was given a back seat for a quite a while. NBA players (most notably) the Los Angeles Clippers were about to protest playing and this eventually led to a lifetime ban of owner Donald Sterling from ever attending another NBA game. Mr. Sterling cannot have any affiliation with any team decisions going forward.

At this present moment, however, Donald Sterling is still the current owner. In the near future, a vote will take place that may force Sterling to be removed as owner.

Sterling is the NBA's longest tenured owner, owning the Clippers since 1981. If Sterling is fully removed as the Clippers owner, there is a possibility that his wife, Shelly Sterling, could become the owner. It's very unlikely because the players have already shown their disprovable toward the Sterling family. The most notable player being LeBron James. James recently said:

"As players we want what's right and we don't feel no one in his family should be able to own the team."

Silver needs a three quarters vote to remove Mr. Sterling from ownership by other NBA owners and it appears as if he will get it. Ms. Sterling says she will continue to "fight" to keep her stake in the team. Mr. Sterling recently did a face-to-face interview with Anderson Cooper and told everybody he "is not" a racist and he "made a mistake."

Of course, that doesn't mean anything to the players now after hearing his voice on the videotapes provided by V Stiviano. Sterling has admitted that it is in fact his voice on the tape. If Sterling remains the Clippers owner, the future may not paint a pretty picture for Clippers free agency. Great free agents and coaches won't want to play for an owner that is a proven racist. Sterling has had his moments in the past, but he always seemed to get out of it with settlements. He may have dug too big of a hole this time.

Ms. Sterling will make the argument that she did not do anything wrong, therefore she cannot be punished or banned from owning the franchise. She will face two big problems, however. One, the players will continue to voice their negative opinion on the Sterling family owning a team. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver won't like this at all. Two, she is not the full owner. The only reason she would become owner is if her husband got banned. She didn't purchase the team and most likely the owners will prevent her from gaining 100 percent ownership.
