The New York Yankees are always in the market to add more talent. Rookie pitcher Masahiro Tanaka has been absolutely unstoppable in his first eight starts and is undefeated. However, their rotation did take a blow when Michael Pineda suffered a muscle strain and Iván Nova was put on injured reserve after he tore his UCL. Nova may require Tommy John surgery.

Nova is only 27 years old and has given the Yankees some great games since 2010. Unfortunately, he has struggled because of injuries this season. This is just Pineda's first season with the Pinstripes, but he has pitched very well in his four starts allowing just a 1.83 ERA. With two quality reliable pitchers out for some time, maybe the Yankees will attempt a blockbuster deal before the trade deadline.

The MLB trade deadline is July 31.

One name that has been thrown around as a possibility is former Cy Young award winner Cliff Lee.

Since entering the Majors in 2002, Lee has been one of the best pitchers in all of Major League Baseball. Lee starts a lot of games, strikes out a lot of batters, and has a lot of postseason experience. As a matter of fact, Lee pitched against the Yankees in the 2009 World Series. In his two World Series games against the Yankees, Lee won both games, including a complete shutout in Game 1. The only two games the Phillies won in that series were the two games that Lee started, so the Yankees know what he's capable of.

Obviously Lee is a great pitcher, but why would the Philadelphia Phillies trade him away to the Yankees? The Phillies are in dead last in the National League East division and competing for a World Series this year may be out of the question. With Cliff Lee turning 36 years old in a few months, the Phillies may want to get value now while they still can. Another thing to consider is inter-league trading. Of course, the Phillies would never trade away Lee to the New York Mets or Atlanta Braves because they play in the same division. The Yankees, however, play in a separate league and will only play the Phillies a few times in the future.

At this point, it really depends on how much the Yankees want to pursue Lee, how much they are willing to give up, and how much the Phillies want in return. Despite Lee's pitching performance this season, the Phillies are only 4-4 in his eight starts with two no decisions. With only four wins in 10 starts, Lee hasn't provided much value for the Phillies.

A Tanaka-Lee combination would be must-watch television for baseball fans. It might not be the Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale duo, but the pair would be elite together.
