A new recommendation from the American Heart Association that doctors wanted to consider is to prescribe omega-3 fish oil supplements to those survivors of a heart attack. Though taking fish oil supplements may not be recommended to prevent heart problems but it may help to extend lives of those patients whose facing the problem.

According to Yahoo News, there is about 21 percent of Americans who take the fish oil supplements, as indicated by the survey of more than 2,000 individuals from the Consumer Reports National Research Center. It suggests that most of them are not getting any protective benefits and there are many of the individuals who takes fish oil supplements with no good reason at all.

Meanwhile, a couple of trials that have been given fish oil to individuals with a high-risk of heart disease, and the evidence show that taking a daily dose of 1,000 of omega-3 fatty acids from the fish oil supplements may lessen the risk of dying by 10 percent. The omega-3 fats that are found in fish oil may help lessen the risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats), lowers triglyceride levels, slower growth of atherosclerotic plaque, and slightly reduces blood pressure.

WebMD reported that sometimes omega-3 can also use to treat people who have a very high triglyceride. In the latest recommendations, the heart association's analyzed its clinical trials that focus on the survivor of heart attacks. Every trial will be assigning patients randomly to either add a fish oil to their standard medications or stay with the standard care alone.

Most of the test the researchers analyzed if fish oil supplements will be used as a prescription or a not over -the -counter fish supplements, the people will strive hard to have a high fatty fish intake in order to gain omge-3 fatty acids. Experts said that the best way to get protective by the benefits of omega-3s is to consume fish instead of fish oil supplements because fish is a lean source of protein and other rich nutrients.
