Ronaldinho:
In 2020, Brazilian football legend faced an unexpected chapter in his life when he and his brother were detained in Paraguay for attempting to enter with fake passports. While his stay in prison was serious, it took a remarkable turn. During their detention, Ronaldinho's skills were showcased in an intra-prison futsal tournament. His team, led by the former Barcelona star, won the final 11-2, with Ronaldinho himself scoring five goals and providing six assists. The unusual prize for their victory? A roasted pig, highlighting a surreal yet notable moment in the life of one of football's greatest players. Ronaldinho and his brother were eventually released after paying a $100,000 fine.
René Higuita:
Colombian goalkeeper René Higuita, famed for his acrobatic saves experienced his own legal nightmare in the early 1990s. Known for his connection with notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, Higuita was detained for his involvement in a controversial negotiation to free the kidnapped daughter of one of Escobar's associates. Despite his claims of innocence, he spent nine months in Bogotá's La Modelo prison, missing Colombia's historic 5-0 win over Argentina and the 1994 World Cup.
Carlos Monzon:
Argentinian boxing great Carlos Monzón, celebrated for his incredible career and record of 87 wins, faced a tragic downfall. In 1988, after a night of heavy drinking, Monzón had a fatal altercation with his wife, Alicia Muñiz. During a heated argument, Monzón violently threw Muñiz from their apartment balcony, leading to her death. The former world middleweight champion was sentenced to 11 years in prison. In 1995, while on a prison leave, Monzón died in a car accident at the age of 52.
Edmundo:
In 1995, Brazilian forward Edmundo faced a tragic moment when his reckless driving caused a fatal car accident, resulting in the deaths of three people. Although he initially served just one day in jail, the case was later reopened, leading to a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Edmundo's career and reputation were marred by this incident, casting a shadow over his athletic achievements.
Edwin Valero:
Venezuelan boxer Edwin Valero, celebrated for his perfect record of 27 wins, all by knockout, experienced a horrifying downfall in 2010. Just two months before his successful title defense, Valero was responsible for the murder of his wife, Jennifer Carolina de Valero, in a hotel. His promising career ended abruptly when he was found hanged in his jail cell, awaiting trial.
