Charismatic, charming and intelligent looking are some characteristics of Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark when he appeared in the "Iron Man" franchise. Downey later went on to make some films where he plays someone witty or funny.

Now, the actor is set to take another franchise to the big screens with "The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle." He is set to take the role of the titular character, a physician with the ability to talk to animals.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, after Universal landed the rights to "The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle," they went on to cast Robert Downey Jr. The actor is known to have a versatility in acting and with this role, fans can explore more of his classy acting to a comedic one. The character is based from the 1920s series of children's books from Hugh Lofting. The director of the film is Academy award winner Stephen Gaghan which will take the screenplay drafted by Tom Shepherd.

Meanwhile, Blastr reported that the "The Voyage of Doctor Dolitte" franchise was already started in 1967 with Rex Harrison taking the role of Doctor Dolittle. The film was a musical one and ended up with a Best Picture Oscar nomination and won with two, Best Song and Best Special Effects. However, the film was not appreciated much by the markets worldwide. Meanwhile, Eddie Murphy revived the role in 1998 and spun many sequels. Murphy's take went on to have three sequels but most of them went on straight to DVD.

This will be another project for Downey after he confirmed that he's doing some more Marvel films with the Avengers, and Spider-Man franchise. Also, he's set to reprise the role for Sherlock Holmes third movie. Nonetheless, Downey as character in "The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle" would be a great addition.
