BabyCenter en Español conducted a baby names survey involving more than 17,000 parents in the United States, Latin America, and Spain to learn what parents are looking for in a name and why they choose the baby names they do.

The survey found, among other things, that most future parents chose a name simply because they liked it, because of its meaning, because of what it represents, or because it was original. More than half of parents surveyed admitted they did an online search for the name to make sure nothing negative came up. Latino parents also looked for names that didn't sound too extravagant and went well with their last name.
