Shoppers in Mexico are skipping the typical basic goods to panic buy beer as news about the temporary closure of brewing plants across the country had recently surfaced. The closing of the breweries in Mexico came as the Mexican government orders the temporary postponement of non-essential business operations in April. This is one of the measures that Mexico has implemented to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19 in the country, says an article.

Breweries' Suspension of Production

Grupo Modelo, a producer of various popular beer brands in Mexico, including Corona, Modelo, and Pacifica, had postponed their operations after government authorities determined that its breweries were classified as a non-essential business. Heineken, a Dutch-brewer, had also paused its production in Mexico.

Ban on the Sale and Purchase of Alcoholic Beverages in Mexico

Mexican authorities across the country have either banned the sale of alcoholic beverages or are limiting the purchase of such goods.

Governor Jaime Rodriguez Calderón of the state of Nuevo Leon had recommended the ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages. According to Calderón, the consumption of such drinks can result in domestic violence as more families are stuck in their homes due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Currently, Mexico reports 2,143 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as Monday. There are 94 reported deaths from the illness, says the Johns Hopkins University.

Reducing the Production of Beer

According to a recent article, the brewer of Corona beer in Mexico will be postponing its production due to the country's health emergency amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the recent article, Grupo Modelo was in the process of reducing the production of its breweries to a minimum.

Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, Corona beer had become a famous topic for memes and jokes. There were even rumors saying that since the beginning of the outbreak, Corona beer sales declined by 40 percent.

However, Constellation Brands, the owner of Corona, rejected the rumor and stated that the sales of the Corona beer are stable in the US.

According to the Mexican government, only key sectors in the country, such as agricultural businesses will be allowed to function amid the COVID-19 crisis.

According to Grupo Modelo, it is ready to deploy a plan to guarantee the supply of beer if the government of Mexico decides to include breweries as an essential business.

The Demand for Beer in the US

In the United States, the sale of beer is inclining as more people are being advised by the government to stay at home to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, says an article.

It was also reported that there was an increase in total beer sales in the US at 34 percent year-over-year for the week that ended on March 21.
