Is it safe to use coconut oil on your face?

According to Cosmopolitan, the whole coconut oil thing has one warning: breakouts. For some, coconut oil is the ultimate acne treatment, while others experienced breakouts when the oil touched their skin. Here are the facts about using coconut oil to your face or skin, straight from the doctor's statements:

  • Coconut oil might be useful in treating acne-prone skin as it has high levels of skin-soothing linoleic acid. "It also contains lauric acid, which is antimicrobial, so it may lower the levels of acne-causing bacteria on the skin and reduce inflammation," says Dr. Zeichner says.
  • Many people with acne or oily skin believe that coconut oil is too heavy and comedogenic for their faces. Well, Dr. Zeichner said, "Everyone is different." you can certainly try coconut oil if you prefer a natural face oil. However, if it ends up breaking your skin out, you will realize it is too heavy for you. Meaning, coconut oil may help or might make things worse.

Coconut oil uses for skin:

  1. Cleanser. Coconut oil or coconut face balm is very effective as a cleansing oil because it dissolves oil, as per Dr. Zeichner.  But if you have super-dry skin, ensure to remove coconut oil afterward thoroughly. You may wash your face first with an oil cleanser to break it all down. Then, clean your face with a gentle facial cleanser to wash everything away.
  2. Makeup remover. Coconut oil also works as a cleanser or makeup remover. It can bind to makeup that allows it to be removed from the skin. Dr.Zeichner recommends using it as a makeup remover for both face and eye area. Besides, coconut facepalm is excellent at breaking down waterproof makeup formulas.
  3. Body oil. Applying coconut oil on their face might not be a good idea for those with oily or acne-prone skin. However, it doesn't mean your body cannot handle coconut oil. It could be having the opposite effect.
