An Arizona mom was charged with murder for allegedly killing her two children with a meat cleaver. Suspect Yui Inoue, 40, was arrested on two counts of first-degree murder, police in Tempe, Arizona said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Sergeant Steve Carbajal said the two victims, aged 7 and 9, had experienced extreme physical trauma before they died, Law and Crime reported.

Carbajal added that several pieces of information and evidence led detectives to believe that the meat cleaver was the weapon used during the crime.

Yui Inoue made her first court appearance on Monday over the loss of life of her two children. The Arizona mom reportedly contacted the police first. She flagged down officers at a police substation on East Apache Boulevard early Saturday morning.

Police said that Yui Inoue was primarily speaking Japanese and told cops that voices in her head told her to kill her children.

The Incident Involving the Arizona Mom

Authorities had called Yui Inoue's husband. They then found out that the two had filed for divorce in April and had fought the night before over money, ABC News Go reported.

Inoue had reportedly wanted to move to Japan. Inoue's husband told investigators that he slept in his car in a parking lot on Friday night after arguing about money. He said that he did not think that the Arizona mom would harm their children. According to her husband, she tried to stab him, so he left at around 12:30 a.m.

Police had been called to their apartment earlier Saturday morning due to a domestic dispute involving the couple. But police at the time had seen no reason to contact child welfare authorities then.

Investigators had arrested the Arizona mom after they noticed that she had what appeared to be blood on her heel, as well as several small cuts on her fingers.

Tempe police had also found the meat clever with a six-inch blade from the suspect's car. The meat cleaver was inside a bag containing clothes with bloodstains. Carbajal further noted that there were bloodstains in her vehicle, according to an Independent report.

Police questioned the Arizona mom through a Japanese interpreter. Inoue said that she had no memory that she had killed her children.

When she woke up, she found out that she had blood on her hands and arms. She said she took a bath before heading to the police station.

A different set of officers had discovered the mutilated bodies of Yui Inoue's 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son when they followed up and visited their apartment at Tempe in Phoenix, Arizona.

Carbajal said it was different when the victims were as young as seven and nine.

Yui Inoue's Court Appearance

Prosecutor Jay Rademacher asked that Inoue be held on a $2 million cash bond. Rademacher said that the victims were helpless and did everything they could to fight their mother.

The Arizona mom had put her head down on the podium when she heard the prosecutor describing her children's injuries.

The commissioner ordered that she be held on the requested bond, surrender her passport, and wear an electronic monitoring device.

The commissioner had also ordered the Arizona mom a court-appointed defense attorney. However, it was not immediately known if one had already been assigned. Yui Inoue's next court appearance is on May 25.
