The most recent title for the Los Tuzos was in the 2016 Clausura, qualifying for the 2016-17 Concacaf Champions League. They would then finish third-place at the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup, which is their best-ever finish in the appearances, according to an MNUFC report.

Cruz Azul was founded under the name Club Deportivo Cruz Azul in March 1927. The team was just an amateur team at the time.

In 1997, the team earned its eighth and most recent championship under coach Luis Fernando Tena, after a last-minute penalty kick scored by Carlos Hermosillo, according to a Popular Timelines report.
