Having friends is a very important aspect of our lives. Woodrow T. Wilson even believed that friends are the cement that glues the world together. However, there are studies that say being alone could be more beneficial than people believe.

According to an article published in Psychology Today, people who prefer to be alone are often viewed by society as different. People believe that human beings are very social due to our evolution, which shows that we rely on relationships in order to survive in the world.

However, having no friends is sometimes better than having to deal with toxic ones. Here are some reasons why being alone is not as bad as the world makes it out to be:

Solitude Boosts Creativity

According to a study from 2017, there are people whose creative side is unleashed when they are alone. The research done by Bowker, et.al. stated that higher levels of creativity are observed in people who are less social.

In addition, interaction with other people tends to cause distractions that hinder the creative process. Those who socialize more have lesser time to focus on brainstorming new ideas.

Forcing Friendships Are Not Beneficial to Anyone

Science of People published that forcing a person to interact with people who do not share the same interests is more detrimental than beneficial. While nature tells us that our relationships help us survive, forcing relationships can lead to unnecessary stress.

Moreover, forcing oneself to interact with other people only causes one to lose alone time, which may lead them to feel annoyed and drained.

Being Alone Helps One See Things Differently

While spending time with other people can help bring out one's true personality, always having friends around leads to a tendency of mirroring their actions which can affect self-awareness.

Being comfortable around people is a good thing. However, it can affect how one sees his own feelings and thoughts. In addition, a person is unable to focus on his or her own perspective because they tend to adjust to what makes their friends comfortable even when it makes them uncomfortable.

More Time Alone Means More Time to Focus on Personal Interests

Having friends is and will always be a great part of life. Society often makes people feel that a person's free time should be spent socializing. But this is not true for all people. There are people who want to be alone in order to focus more on their interests, Healthline reported.

Some people avoid social gatherings to spend more time on their craft or even spend time just to finish a book that has been waiting on the shelf for days. The so-called 'social responsibility' that comes along with having friends lead to people not being able to focus their energy on their own wants.

Having no friends is usually viewed negatively by society. However, many people are not able to take into account the benefits brought by solitude. While many people believe that being alone equates to loneliness, it is not true for some.

For others being alone or having no friends is their escape from the constant demand of society for one to fit in.
