A lawyer of one of the nurses being questioned over the death of Diego Maradona blamed the doctors assigned to the Argentine football superstar.

Lawyer Rodolfo Baque told reporters on Wednesday, June 16, after his client, nurse Dahiana Gisela Madrid, was questioned by prosecutors that doctors killed Diego Maradona through negligence.

AFP reported that Madrid was Maradona's daytime nurse and was the last one who saw the football legend alive. The nurse was also one of Maradona's medical team members who tried to revive him when they found the football superstar with no signs of life.

Nurse's Lawyer Blames Doctors Over Diego Maradona's Death

Speaking to reporters, Baque argued that the ones who should be blamed for Maradona's death were the doctors for their negligence.

"They killed Diego," said Baque, pointing out that the doctors on the medical team being investigated are the ones who were treating the football star and not his client.

Weeks after undergoing brain surgery for a blood clot, Diego Maradona died of a heart attack at the age of 60 last November.

NDTV reported that Madrid's attorney said that Maradona was being treated for heart trouble but was also on a psychiatric medication that sped up his heart rate.

"In the end, there were many warning signs that Maradona was going to die, give or take a day. And none of the doctors did anything to prevent it," said the lawyer of the 36-year-old nurse during a break on Madrid's interrogation.

Baque also mentioned an incident wherein Madrid asked that a CAT scan be done on Diego Maradona after he fell in the hospital. However, Baque noted that an aide to Maradona allegedly refused the CAT scan to be done, arguing that it would look bad if the press found out about it.

Dahiana Gisela Madrid's interrogation lasted for more than eight hours.

Diego Maradona's Death Probe: What We Know so Far

The interrogation of Dahiana Gisela Madrid came days after the prosecutors questioned another nurse about the death of the football legend.

Madrid is among seven people under investigation for manslaughter after a board of experts looking into Diego Maradona's death found he had received inadequate care.

The interrogation of the 36-year-old nurse marks the second questioning from the medical team assigned to take care of the football superstar.

Five more people are scheduled to be questioned by the court, including a psychiatrist, psychologist, and nursing coordinator.

An investigation was opened after a complaint was filed by two of the football superstar's five children against neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque.

Diego Maradona's children blamed Luque for their father's deteriorating condition after the brain operation. Luque was scheduled for questioning by the prosecutors on June 28.

The medical team, including nurse Madrid, was not allowed to leave Argentina. If found guilty, they could face eight to 25 years in prison.
