California Police on Wednesday said that the Sacramento shooting over the weekend was fueled by gang violence.

Police also said that at least two gangs were involved in the shooting, according to Associated Press. However, the authorities declined more details regarding the matter.

"While we cannot at this time elaborate on the precise gang affiliation of individuals involved, gangs and gang violence are inseparable from the events that drove these shootings," the police noted in a statement, per USA Today.

Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said that the suffering inflicted by the gang violence in Sacramento was not limited to the members of the group but also affects the lives of innocent people.

Los Angeles' gang researcher Alex Alonso said that the gang shooting just like what happened in Sacramento rarely happens in a public place with so many victims.

California State University Criminal Justice Professor Gregory Brown said gangs usually target their rivals through drive-by shootings with fewer victims, but innocent bystanders are also sometimes held as casualties, per AP.

However, Brown underscored that the place does not matter for gangs if they would attack a rival member.
