New details emerged on Tuesday regarding the death of former NBA player Adreian Payne in Orlando, Florida on Monday.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Payne, 31, was shot and killed Monday morning by a 29-year-old man named Lawrence Dority after they had an argument outside the man's house, New York Post reported.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports, the sheriff's office noted that the former NBA player's killing was "premeditated."

A witness reportedly told police that Payne had arrived at Dority's home in Orlando on "Sunday night/early Monday morning" to possibly act as a "mediator" between Dority and his girlfriend.

The witness noted that Dority and his girlfriend "have a relationship where they argue often." Yahoo! Sports reported that Payne and his girlfriend went to Dority's residence at the request of the shooter's girlfriend.

In the court documents, Dority told police that Payne had no business going into his house "this late at night" and thought the former NBA player's presence was a threat.

The Murder of Ex-NBA Player Adreian Payne

Adreian Payne was shot in a townhome community in the Econ Landing neighborhood at around 1:30 a.m.

According to court documents, Lawrence Dority claimed that Payne made "movements with his right hand in the right side of his waistband" and told Dority that "I'll smoke you bra."

Police said Dority then quickly went into his house to grab a firearm, went back outside, and shot Payne once before returning to his residence. Payne was later transported to a hospital but died there from his injuries.

Dority told the police that he was only protecting his family and home, adding that "his actions were justified."

Dority, who called 911, said that Payne was trying to come into his house and "reached for his gun," so he ran inside their house and shot him.

But following their investigation, police said Payne was "not threatening Dority in any way," adding that the former NBA player had no firearm in his possession.

Dority was eventually arrested and taken to the Orange County Jail on Monday. He was charged with first-degree murder with a firearm. Court records showed that he pleaded not guilty to the charge on Tuesday.
