Chicago Memorial Day shootings have caused nine deaths out of 46 people who have been shot over the weekend.

A series of shootings erupted in the state of Chicago as residents commemorated Memorial Day.

NBC Chicago reported that a gunman opened fire on Sunday around 10:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of West Walton Street, according to Chicago police.

The shooting suspect barricaded himself inside a building for at least 90 minutes as SWAT officers and negotiators responded to the scene.

The 23-year-old man is currently in custody. He was shot in the foot and is in good condition, according to police.

However, officials did not note who shot the gunman. Investigators said that the incident was domestic-related.

The shootings that occurred across the state reportedly outpaced last year's Memorial Day weekend, wherein 37 people were shot.

A domestic attack in Humboldt Park on Sunday resulted in a man being killed with others wounded, including a gunman.

On Monday, a man was killed in a shooting in Englewood on the South Side. He was inside a residence at about 2:50 p.m. when someone opened fire, hitting him in the face and the abdomen.

Police also said that two men killed each other hours earlier during a shootout in Englewood. Both men were pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Chicago Shooting Statistics

The year 2021 was considered one of the most violent records in Chicago, with shootings that left more people dead in any single year in a quarter-century.

Chicago police department noted that 2021 ended with 797 homicides, 25 more than were recorded in 2020, 299 more than in 2019, and the most since 1996.

There were also 3,561 shooting incidents in 2021, which is over 300 more than were recorded in 2020 and a staggering 1,415 more shooting incidents than were recorded in the city in 2019, according to another NBC Chicago report.

Police Superintendent David Brown previously said that they all know that 2021 has been a challenging year in Chicago, adding that too many families are reeling from the loss of loved ones due to gun violence.

Brown noted that a huge part of the homicide cases was the result of conflicts between rival gangs.

In addition, the Chicago Police Department has taken more illegal weapons off the street than any other local police force in the United States.
