Naya Rivera is quite comfortable in front of the camera; the Latina portrays Santana Lopez on "Glee." Now, she has made her directorial debut with a public service announcement that looks at the cultural side of immigration. The video lines up with Immigration Heritage Month.

In the video, which was released exclusively to BuzzFeed, people of different backgrounds pass a note to each other. The people represent different generations of Americans, such as one man whose family emigrated in the 1800s, reminding the viewer that many Americans can identify with the United States because of immigration.

"The way it weaved through people's lives, we're all interconnected," the actress told BuzzFeed. "We wanted to make it fluid and beautiful."

After the paper goes through the hands of many, it finally ends up in the hands of a woman. She opens the note, and though the blonde woman may not be what people picture when they think of immigrants, she is welcomed to the United States.

Rivera said the story mattered to her.

"Aside from being a Latina, my family immigrated from Puerto Rico and Yugoslavia so I know all about that," she said. "I wouldn't be able to do what I do today if they didn't come to America. Everybody has an immigration story."

The video was shot in New York City, and included 360-degree shots.

Rivera very purposefully chose New York because it's such a "melting pot."

She also explained that sometimes people don't look at the bigger picture when debating immigration. The political side often wins instead, she said.

"Immigration shows how beautiful America is as a country, how diverse it is," she said. "It's what you get when you have different cultures in one place. If everybody thought that way [immigration] would be more of a no-brainer."
