The conviction of Jeffrey Epstein associate and infamous child trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell should have many people celebrate, as the judge handed her a 20-year prison sentence. However, many pointed out that given her extensive abuse of minors for years, she got a pretty light sentence. Others also pointed out that she should have gotten a lengthier sentence than R. Kelly, the famous R&B singer who is also an infamous child sex trafficker.

R. Kelly, real name Robert Kelly, was sentenced to 30 years for sex trafficking and racketeering charges. But while his sexual abuse of minors ran for decades, he did not run the most extensive "worldwide sex trafficking ring" like Maxwell, who helped Epstein lure minors into their sex trafficking ring, and actively participated in sexually assaulting them.

Ghislaine Maxwell and R. Kelly's Prison Sentence Disparity Gets Flak from Twitter

Newsweek reports that the 10-year disparity in the sentences had been quite obvious to many on social media. Independent journalist Tayler Hansen pointed this out on Twitter. R. Kelly is a black R&B singer who sexually abused minors, while Ghislaine Maxwell is a rich white socialite who ran an extensive worldwide child sex trafficking ring and participated in their sexual abuse.

In a follow-up post, Hansen also pointed out that this may be part of a larger issue, and it seems to be protecting some very powerful people who might have been part of Maxwell's elite clientele.

Others, however, think that race may have played into the decisions.

While many were dissatisfied with Maxwell's sentencing, many others pointed out that at least she still got a lengthy prison sentence.

Another Twitter user, however, stated that things are changing, as R. Kelly was a celebrity and Maxwell was an elite backed by some of the most powerful people on Earth. Just the mere fact that they were sentenced means that things might be changing. The tweet added that the pressure must be kept on.

Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein Accuser Feels 'Tremendous Relief' After Maxwell Sentencing

While the Twitterverse was arguing whether or not Maxwell deserved more than Kelly, one victim of the latter talked to CBS News, and said she felt good that her abuser is going to jail for 20 years.

Annie Farmer was one of the people who accused both Maxwell and Epstein of abuse. In her testimony last year, she told Jurors that Maxwell invited her to Jeffrey Epstein's ranch in New Mexico in 1996 when she was still 16. She was lured there with the promise that she was getting help with her academic endeavors. She said Maxwell being there made her feel safe until the former socialite began sexually abusing her, and Epstein joined in.

In a statement to CBS Mornings, Farmer said that it was an intense and emotional day. However, she also says that she felt tremendous relief when she heard Maxwell's sentence being read.

Maxwell's team is planning to appeal the sentence, and they have 14 days to do so.
