Socialite Ghislaine Maxwell had made headlines with her involvement with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and royal family member Prince Andrew.

Maxwell was sentenced to spend 20 years in federal prison on Tuesday for scheming with Epstein to groom and sexually abuse underage girls.

Being part of the high society further escalated the coverage of Maxwell's case and provided the public a peek at her notable wealth.

Maxwell being out in the public eye has led people to question her net worth, wondering how she acquired her wealth and gained prominence in the upper-class social scenes.

Ghislaine Maxwell Net Worth 2022

The U.S. Sun reported that Maxwell has a net worth of $20 million, raising questions how she accumulated such wealth and what she does for a living.

During the time of her arrest in 2020, Maxwell claimed to only be worth around $3.5 million. However, a Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant found evidence that the socialite's net worth was closer to $20 million.

It included assets that were placed into a trust controlled by Scott Borgenson, who is a man she secretly married in 2016, according to a Celebrity Net Worth report.

Maxwell's father is also the late business tycoon Robert Maxwell, who previously owned The Daily Mail.

The imprisoned socialite attended Marlborough College followed by Oxford University before she started going out with Italian aristocrat Count Gianfranco Cicogna.

Writer Anna Pasternak was in the same social circle as Maxwell while in Oxford. She noted that it was clear to her that even as an undergraduate, Maxwell was interested in power and money.

Pasternak added that Maxwell was one of those people at parties "who always looked over your shoulder if there was somebody more powerful or more interesting."

In 1981, Maxwell lost her financial support when her father was found dead on his yacht.

Harry Mount, who was working at the New York branch of the Daily Telegraph, met Maxwell.

In 2021, he wrote that Maxwell had been left with an £80,000 a year income from a trust fund.

Ghislaine Maxwell Prison Sentence

Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced 20 years in federal prison on Tuesday. She did not testify in her defense during the trial late last year, which ended with her conviction on five counts, including sex trafficking of a minor.

CNN News noted that Maxwell spoke in court to the victims shortly before the sentence was handed down.

Maxwell said at the podium that Epstein "should have been here before all of you," adding that it is not about the late sex offender, ultimately.

She apologized for the pain that the victims have experienced, adding that she hopes her conviction brings them "closure."

Prosecutors had originally asked the judge to sentence Maxwell to 30 to 55 years in prison, while the probation department recommended 20 years.

Maxwell's attorney requested a sentence between 4.25 and 5.25 years in prison.

Judge Alison Nathan said that Maxwell is not "punished in place of Epstein," rather she is being punished for the role that she played.
