A new group of migrants, set on a journey to the United States, started to walk from the southern part of Mexico on Monday.

According to Associated Press, the new migrant caravan is composed of 2,000 asylum seekers. The group of migrants reportedly started their march on Tapachula, located on Mexico's border with Guatemala.

The nationalities of the migrants in the caravan are unclear as of Monday. However, Moises Chinchilla, one Nicaraguan who belonged to the group, claimed that they will still keep going even if what they are doing is "tough" in hopes of letting them through the border. Chinchilla also shared that most of the migrants in the caravan are hoping for a temporary residence permit.

According to reports, thousands of migrants are reportedly stranded in Tapachula, Mexico, due to the slow paperwork at overcrowded Mexican immigration offices.

Mexican officials have succeeded to disperse migrant caravans in the past after they gave out temporary residence permits to migrants. The said permits allow the migrants, mostly from Venezuela and Central America, to stay on Mexican territory while pursuing immigration procedures.

Earlier in July, another migrant caravan was also stopped by authorities from Mexico when they issued temporary residence permits. During that time, the country's National Institute of Migration said that officials handed 3,000 permits.

Mayors Ask Biden Admin for Help Over Influx of Migrants

On July 21, Democratic mayors from New York and Washington asked for the help of the Biden administration over the influx of migrants in their jurisdiction, due to the busses of migrants arriving in their states from Texas and Arizona.

"The mere fact that they sent people out of their states, people who were seeking refuge in our country, then sent them away - did they deny that," Mayor Eric Adams from New York said, adding that the migrants ended up in their jurisdiction because they cannot get the support from the states who transferred them.

Adams said that they need help from FEMA, claiming that their city is already dealing with a shelter population.

According to Border Report, about 5,200 migrants were transferred from Texas since April and about 1,100 migrants were transferred by Arizona in May.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has previously said the administration is looking into the concerns of the said mayors.

Migrants Encounter the Border

The latest report on migrant encounters at the borders, released last week, revealed that the total migrant encounters since October of 2,002,602 surpassed the total migrant encounters in the previous fiscal year, which has 1,956,519.

The report showed that Mexican still make up the highest nationality encountered at the border, followed by Guatemalans, and then Hondurans.

The number of migrant encounters in June this fiscal year has significantly dropped despite the total surpassing the two million mark.

According to the report, 247,163 migrant encounters were reported in June while 274,831 were encountered in May.
