A 15-year-old teenager went on a rampage in North Carolina's capital, Raleigh, on Thursday, killing five people and injuring two others.

The shooter, who was identified as a white boy, killed two people in a residential neighborhood before taking his killing spree to a hiking trail, where he killed three more, Associated Press reported.

The teen was eventually cornered by police and arrested at around 9:37 p.m. local time in a home. Authorities did not release the shooter's identity.

One of the five people killed was an off-duty police officer. Another cop was also among those injured. Both of them were sent to nearby hospitals, but only one of the officers was eventually released.

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said the suspect was hospitalized and in critical condition following his arrest. However, authorities have not said how he was injured. As of Friday, Patterson noted that police have yet to determine a motive for the attack.

North Carolina Police Advised Residents to Stay Inside as Mass Shooter Went on Rampage in Raleigh

Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin talked to the media after the mass shooting and said: "This is a sad and tragic day." Baldwin noted that the gunfire broke out at around 5 p.m. in the Hedingham neighborhood and along the Neuse River Greenway, a biking and walking trail behind some of the houses.

When the gunfire was reported, officers from various law enforcement agencies were sent in and closed off the area. They also warned residents to stay inside while they searched for the shooter.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper denounced the mass shooting and said: "Tonight, terror has reached our doorstep. The nightmare of every community has come to Raleigh. This is a senseless horrific and infuriating act of violence that has been committed."

Baldwin added: "We must stop this mindless violence in America, we must address gun violence... We have much to do, and tonight we have much to mourn."

This mass shooting on Thursday has already been entered into the Associated Press/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Killings database. It has been listed as the 25th mass shooting in 2022 alone. When "four or more people are killed excluding the perpetrator," it is considered a mass killing.

Here are the five victims who tragically died in the shooting rampage. The police officer who was killed was Gabriel Torres, a 29-year-old off-duty cop. According to The News & Observer, he was not in uniform when he was shot by the teenager and was traveling to work.

Torres, also a former marine, had been with the police department for 18 months. He leaves behind his wife and one child. The Raleigh Police Protective Association has launched fundraising efforts for his family.

Nicole Connors, 52, was also shot and killed by the gunman. Her husband, Tracey Howard, described her as the matriarch of her extended family, who "got things done," the Associated Press reported.

Another one killed was identified as Susan Karnatz, 49, who was an avid runner and fitness enthusiast. Perhaps one of the most tragic deaths was Mary Marshall, 34, who was only walking her dog when she was shot. She was supposed to get married later this month.

Marshall was a U.S. Navy veteran who was described by her step-grandmother as an "absolute fanatic about Disney World." She was on her phone with her fiance before she died.

The final and youngest victim was James Thompson, 16. He was a junior at Knightdale High School in Raleigh.
