Police in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca made a gruesome discovery after seeing a dog trotting down a street with a human arm in its mouth.

The Oaxacan police said Wednesday they found a dismembered human body after receiving a call about a black dog carrying a human arm in its mouth.

State prosecutors later noted that this has led them to investigate and find other parts of the dismembered body in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the state capital, Oaxaca city.

According to the Associated Press, this was the third time since last month that dogs have been seen carrying human body parts in Mexico.

Dog Found Victim's Dismembered Body Dumped in a River

According to Infobae, the black dog was found carrying the arm at around 9:30 a.m. on the corner of Pino Suarez Street and Insurgentes Avenue in the Emilio Zapata neighborhood of Martin Mexicapan.

Mexican authorities believed the dog found the arm on the Atoyac River's bank. First responders from the Municipal Police of Oaxaca de Juarez then cordoned off the area and found several more body parts, which they believed were abandoned and dumped on the river's bank.

Milenio reported that the other body parts had been forwarded to the institute of expert services to undergo various studies and possibly identify the victim through a genetic profile.

The Oaxaca police are still investigating the case. However, some local reports said it is possibly linked to the turf war between drug cartels operating in the state.

Dog Took Off With Cartel Victim's Head in Mexico's Zacatecas State

In late October, a stray dog with a human head hanging out of its mouth was seen on video running down a street in Mexico's Zacatecas state.

Shocking videos shared on social media show the dog holding the human head by the neck and running along a dark street, possibly taking it somewhere to eat it. The corpse's head and other body parts were reportedly left in an ATM booth in Monte Escobedo town.

Officials said a note referring to a Mexican drug cartel was left next to the body parts. The message was likely intended to intimidate or taunt their rivals or authorities.

The stray dog reportedly grabbed the human head and took off before authorities could secure the scene. Police reportedly had to pry the human head out of the hungry dog's mouth.

Zacatecas has seen bloody turf wars between Mexican drug cartels in recent years. The Jalisco cartel, Sinaloa Cartel, Gulf Cartel, Northeast Cartel, and Los Talibanes are the drug cartels reportedly operating in the state.

Early this month, clandestine graves holding human remains were found in Mexico's state of Guanajuato after residents told volunteer searchers of seeing a dog with a human leg. However, AP reported that state authorities did not confirm that.
