Dr. Anthony Fauci has issued a warning to the public, saying that the United States is certainly still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. He added that he is very troubled by the divisive state of American politics.

Meanwhile, Fauci said that around 300 to 400 people are still dying from COVID-19 infections every day, with the number of those taking the latest vaccine booster has been less than 15%.

White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha said Sunday that they understand that people want to move forward and that they can do so if "they keep their immunity up to date."

Fauci has become a prominent name in the United States during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was known to have also challenged former U.S. President Donald Trump on everything regarding the pandemic, including the use of hydroxychloroquine and mask mandates.

Fauci said that the situation now is much better "than we were a year ago," but that it is still "not a great place to be."

He said that current case and death rates are "dramatically lower than one year ago," which was when the omicron variant started to surge.

In August, Fauci announced his plans to step down from his role running the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Anthony Fauci Stepping Down From Role

In his final White House briefing before leaving his official positions, Fauci said that he hopes he is remembered for giving his job everything he had and for never leaving "anything on the field."

The top pandemic official noted that he will let "other people judge" the value or not of his accomplishments.

Aside from being the director of NIAID, Fauci has been the chief medical adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden.

He encouraged people who based what they say on evidence and data to "speak out more." Fauci said that the way to counter misinformation and disinformation is to do whatever one as often as can to "provide current information."

He also said that he will fully cooperate with any oversight hearing in the House once Republicans take control in January.

Anthony Fauci on Any Congress Hearing

Fauci said that he can defend and explain and "stand by everything we said" once Republicans start oversight hearings, adding that he has nothing to hide on the matter, as reported by Bloomberg.

Some Republican lawmakers have sought to rise from their political profile by contrasting themselves with Fauci, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Fauci said he will not be retiring and that he will continue to push forward "science and public health" while also mentoring the next generation to "help prepare the world to face future infectious diseases."

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dubbed Fauci as a "source of information and facts" during the briefing.
