Former Vice President Mike Pence has recently joined the list of top-ranking government officials discovered to be handling classified documents outside the White House.

Lawyers for the former vice president found the classified documents last week the Pence's Indiana home.

The documents were then turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with investigators already looking at U.S. President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump's own set of classified documents.

Pence's representatives sent a letter to the National Archives about the secret materials. Lawyers noted in a separate letter that the FBI bypassed "standard procedures" and requested the "direct possession" of the classified documents.

Pence's lawyer said that a "small number of documents" with classified markings were "inadvertently boxed and transported" to Pence's home at the end of Trump's administration.

Pence sought legal help from a specialist in the handling of the classified materials "out of an abundance of caution."

The former vice president sought assistance after the discovery of the Biden classified documents in his Delaware home.

Trump took on his Truth Social account to defend Pence, saying that the former vice president "never did anything knowingly dishonest in his life."

Mike Pence's Classified Documents

Pence's legal team had a phone conversation with the Archives' chief operating officer and general counsel, wherein the conversation includes a suggestion for Pence to hand out all four boxes to the agency so they can review the materials.

On January 23, the boxes of classified documents were handed to the Archives by Pence's lawyer, Greg Jacob, after the FBI collected the materials.

Jacob noted in his letter to the Archives that Pence "immediately secured" the classified documents found and locked them in a safe for further direction on proper handling from the National Archives.

Two people familiar with the matter noted that it was Pence's longtime aide, Matt Morgan, who found the documents, according to CBS News.

A Pence aide said that the documents were placed in an insecure area of the home. However, those were taped up and not believed to be opened.

GOP Rep. James Comer noted that Pence has also informed the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on Tuesday about the discovery of the documents.

Comer also commented on the classified documents found in Biden's home, noting that Pence's "transparency" is in "stark contrast" to the Biden White House staff.

The House committee, which is led by Comer, is investigating the documents found at Biden's former office and home.

Classified Documents Saga

Aside from the classified documents found at the president's former think tank office, there were also more than half a dozen documents seized at Biden's residence in Delaware, as confirmed by his personal lawyer.

The documents with classified markings include materials from the time he was a senator and when he was the U.S. vice president during Barack Obama's administration, as reported by The New York Times.

Justice Department reportedly requested that the search not be made public before it was conducted, according to Biden's attorney, Bob Bauer.

Meanwhile, Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence underwent search after lawyers for Trump resisted efforts by the Archives and Justice Department to hand over the documents.

Trump and his advisers are also under probe for obstructing an inquiry into the classified documents.
